My First Horse

I’ve always said that I was destined to a life of horses. It was bred right into me, I never stood a chance. Horses go way back on my dad’s side, and it was my grandpa‘s recommendation that I have a Haflinger as my first horse. Cisco is everything that most ponies are, and everything that most ponies aren’t.

Cisco may only be half of a Haflinger, but eight year old me fell for him all the same. His sale ad specifically said he was “not a kid horse”. Even though Cisco was only five, my dad knew that was the horse for his kid.

Cisco is spunky and brimming with life. We’ve always said that God stuffed an extra big heart in a little horse, and Cisco never knew that he wasn’t as big as a 16hh stallion.

If you asked me about my childhood, I’d point at the little paint pony and tell you that he gave me the best one. He has lots of little rotten pony quirks that most ponies do, such as ducking to see if you’re still paying attention or refusing to listen when you asked him to stop.

As an adult who’s rode lots of horses, I can truly appreciate the kind of horse that Cisco is. He always showed up when it mattered. He’s carried me through parades, rodeos, gymkanas, hunting trips, pack trips, cattle gatherings and miles of trail. He’s a heck of a horse to work cows on and has helped me plenty of times with an unruly horse in the round pen.

Cisco has outworked and outdone every horse I’ve ever rode and never taken a lame step. His mind and logic are incredibly sound, and I know now that a horse with his kind of common sense is incredibly rare.

As of 2026, Cisco is 18 and still larger than life. He wrote the book on horsemanship and read me every page. He is my best friend, partner and stead fast right hand who will always have a home here with me.

I’ve been asked many times over the years why I never got a bigger horse, but Cisco doesn’t know that he’s 13.2hh and he’s never rode like it. I don’t think I can count the times this horse has shown up for me or kept me safe, and it’s a debt that I’ll spend the rest of his life repaying.
